Cole Kpekawa believes it is “way too early” for Colchester United to start concerning themselves about poor results, following back-to-back defeats at the hands of Accrington and Aston Villa during the first week of the season.

Kpekawa is all set to make his ‘second’ home league debut against Stevenage tomorrow afternoon, his first as a permanent signing although he made his U’s home league debut as a loanee from QPR nearly three years ago, against Coventry in November, 2014.

The 21-year-old will be hoping for a better outcome tomorrow – the U’s were beaten 1-0 at home by the Sky Blues – and he expects the current-day U’s to get off the mark for the campaign against a Stevenage side who began their season with an opening day 3-3 home draw against Newport.

“It’s going well for me so far, I have no complaints,” explained Kpewaka, recruited from Barnsley last month.

“It was a bad start against Accrington (3-1 defeat), and the boys know that we are better than that.

“But it was only the first game of the season, and you can never judge a team after the first few games. It is way too early to start worrying about results, and once we get our first win of the season, then we will get our mojo back”

Ironically, no U’s outfield player in the starting line-up from Kpekawa’s debut against Coventry is likely to be in tomorrow’s starting XI, a reflection of how much change there has been at the Weston Homes Community Stadium in recent years.

Tom Eastman is still very much on the U’s books, having signed a new deal this summer, although he will again probably miss out tomorrow afternoon due to an ankle injury, sustained at Accrington.

With the exception of keeper Sam Walker, none of the other players who started against Coventry in 2014 are still at the Essex club.

Kpekawa operated a sa loan-back during his short-term loan stay, as a raw 18-year-old, but he has played as a left-sided centre-half in the U’s first two games of 2017-18, starting in Wednesday night’s 2-1 home loss to Villa in the Carabao Cup.

“I thought we were excellent against Aston Villa,” insisted Kpewaka.

“We passed them off the park all night, and we can take a lot of positives from that game.

“We were very unlucky not to at least get a draw and force extra time.

“Villa was a great game to play in, and hopefully we can get our first win against Stevenage on Saturday.”
