National League South Chippenham Town 1 Braintree Town 1 Despite a second half of bombarding the home goal, the Iron left Hardenhuish Park frustrated with just a point.
They had a disastrous start, conceding a goal after just 50 seconds, when in their first attack the home side snatched the lead through a speculative first time shot from Jake Jackson on the edge of the area that flew into the top corner of the net.
Undeterred by this setback, the Iron were soon on the front foot and equalised on nine minutes thanks to a fine through ball from Joe Ellul that saw home keeper Jared Thompson fail to gather properly and young Reece Grant quickly snap up the loose ball to make it 1-1.
From then onwards the game was almost one-way traffic with the Iron causing all kinds of problems for the home defence in the first half.
Grant almost added a second while Marcell Barrington, Luke Allen and Phil Roberts all saw shots scrambled clear before Billy Crook nearly scored Iron’s second goal with a careful lob shot.
The second half saw the Iron continue to dominate and control the game with players peppering the home goal with Roberts, Allen, Grant and substitute Karl Oliyide all having shots charged down at the last moment.
In the dying moments Grant and Roberts almost found the net for a winning goal but were denied by some last-gasp defending and Ellul saw his header brushed the top of the home bar from a corner.
It ended a frustrating afternoon for the Iron who were by far the better side but just failed to find the net for that elusive winning goal.
Boss Brad Quinton said: “We played all the football, controlled practically all of the game and created so many chances throughout the afternoon so it was both frustrating and disappointing.
“They packed their defence and were intent on doing everything possible to stop us from playing.
“We have to accept that more teams will play that way against us and we have to learn and work harder to overcome such situations.
Next up for the Iron is at home on Saturday against Hemel Hempstead, kick-off 3pm.
