Nottingham Forest have reportedly had a £2m bid for striker Daryl Murphy accepted by Newcastle United.

The Republic of Ireland international is in the top 10 of Ipswich Town’s all-time leading league goalscorers after netting 67 times during four spells between 2010 and 2016.

He departed Portman Road in a £3m deal last August and played his part in the Magpies’ quickfire return to the Premier League by scoring five goals in seven starts and eight substitute appearances before immediately being transfer listed by Rafa Benitez.

Murphy’s former club Sunderland had been linked to the 34-year-old, but Forest – who have just sold Britt Assombalonga to Middlesbrough for £15m – appear to have won the race with the offer of a two-year deal.

Town do not face Forest until December 2, with Mark Warburton’s men travelling to Portman Road.

Ipswich continue to search for a striker themselves after the summer departures of Brett Pitman (Portsmouth, free), Kieffer Moore (Rotherham, loan) and Leon best (released).

Mick McCarthy is keen to bolster a forward line made up of Joe Garner, David McGoldrick and Freddie Sears before the big kick-off in little more than a fortnight, having seen a recent loan deal for Wolves forward Jon Dadi Bodvarsson hijacked by Reading.
