Having won the feature race on Tuesday, John Gosden and Frankie Dettori repeated the dose when Daban, in only her second race, took the £60,000 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket.

Daban won her maiden at Kempton in November and got up by almost a length to beat Hugo Palmer’s Unforgetable Filly and Andrew Balding’s Poets Vanity.

Favourite Roly Poly led early but dropped away to finish seventh of the 11 runners.

That left a quartet to fight out the final furlong before Dettori drove Daban home on the near-side for his seventh success in the race and his fourth in succession. The filly was returned at 12/1.

Paddy Power cut Daban’s odds for the Qipco 1,000 Guineas from 40/1 to 12/1. Rhododendron remains the 11/4 favourite.

Dettori said: “It is the first time I’ve ridden her. She travelled brilliantly, showed a good turn of foot and can only improve. She showed a good attitude.

“She has won her trial and is entitled to give the Guineas a go.”

Gosden, winning the race for the sixth time, said: “I was expecting a good show from her. She’s a sweet, lovely filly and is very relaxed. She has quickened up well and she’ll improve from that.

“She is in the Classic here and in France so we will talk to the owner about which way he wants to play it.”

Steel of Madrid hunted down Godolphin’s Folkswood to pull off a minor shock in the Earl of Sefton Stakes over nine furlongs.

William Buick tried to make all on 5/2 favourite Folkswood down the centre of the course, but Pat Dobbs kept the Richard Hannon trained colt close and in the final furlong moved on to score at generous odds of 10/1.

Hannon said: “We played around with his trip last year. I think he gets a mile and a half but a lot of his best form has been over this trip so we thought we’d let him have a go over this track again. He looks well and has been moving great.”

Dettori and Gosden went on to complete a 109/1 double when Dancing Breeze, at 15/2, won the maiden for three-year-old fillies, beating favourite Natavia.

The fillies’ maiden for two-year-olds went to 11/8 favourite Formidable Kid who made a winning debut under Richard Kingscote for trainer Tom Dascombe.

The finale, over 10 furlongs, went to Gosden again, completing a 338/1 treble when Middle Kingdom, a winner of his only previous start in November, scored for Jimmy Fortune at 7/2.
