Grundisburgh boss Micky Squirrell says he feels two wins from their final eight Suffolk & Ipswich League senior division games will be enough for the village side to secure their senior status.

Grundisburgh will make it an unbroken 38 years in the top-flight of the SIL should they do so - a fine achievement.

Squirrell has been at the forefront of much of the success the club has had during those years.

But recent seasons have not been so fruitful.

Currently Grundisburgh sit fourth bottom of the table, eight points clear of the bottom two, who are set to be relegated.

This weekend Squirrell’s team travel to Leiston St Margarets in a match neither side will want to lose and at a pitch Grundisburgh don’t have a good record at.

“We are desperate for a win after five league games without one,” Squirrell said.

“Our main aim all season is to retain our senior status. We have an eight-point cushion over Leiston, but they have played a game less.

“I feel two wins from our final eight games should insure our safety.

“One concern I have is that Junction Meadow is not a happy hunting ground for us after losing on our last three visits there in the league.”

Basement side Ransomes will do well to take anything from their home clash with Cranes, Iain Radnor’s side currently in fine form, beating Capel Plough in the Bob Coleman Cup last weekend.

Haughley and East Bergholt meet in another match that both sides will want to win to ease any relegation fears. But at the top it is Achilles who lead the way.

Liam Hillyard’s side won easily at Bergholt last weekend and now have a nine-point lead over Cops and Cranes who are on the same games played, while Benhall, in second, may only be eight behind Achilles, but have played three games more.

Achilles will face a tough test at Capel Plough this weekend but one would think if they come through it with victory, the title is theirs for the taking.
