After three league defeats in as many matches, Leiston’s season doesn’t get any easier tomorrow afternoon as table-toppers Billericay Town are the visitors to Victory Road, writes Craig Cooper.

Glen Driver’s side have started to lose ground on the chasing pack and are currently sitting 10th in the league table, seven points off the final play-off spot, having lost 2-1 at Hendon in midweek.

But Driver remains optimistic going forward, despite Leiston’s setbacks of late.

He said: “At the moment silly mistakes are costing us, yet again we have lost another game by the odd goal (8 out of 11 league defeats this season have been by a single goal).

“It wouldn’t be so bad to take if sides were working hard for their goals, but we have gifted goals against Merstham and Hendon in the last two games.

“We don’t however become a bad side over night and if we cut mistakes out we have a chance. We need to be more ruthless in front of goal and Billericay on Saturday is the perfect platform to get a reaction.

“I stick by my squad, we have been here before and it’s up to us to turn our fortunes around.’

Tomorrow’s opponents are riding on a crest of a wave, having lost just twice in all competitions this season. They continue in the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy next week, plus are still in the league and county cups.

They also remain top of the Bostik table after an impressive 5-0 win over Lowestoft Town on Tuesday evening. They are four points ahead of second-placed Dulwich Hamlet with five games in hand.

Leiston have a good home record against the Essex side. They have won two and drawn two in the league since first playing them in 2013.

Last season, they excelled beating Billericay 4-1. Two goals from Matt Blake, and one each from Niko Muir and Ollie Brown saw them put in one of their best performances of the campaign.

Meanwhile, there is no match for the Reserves this afternoon. In midweek, they were beaten 4-0 by Holland FC. They play their next game next Saturday when Brantham Athletic Reserves visit in the re-arranged Suffolk Senior Cup quarter-final.
