In this week’s nostalgia we take a look back to October 2007, when Mick McCarthy’s Wolves came to Portman Road but were sent away with their tails between their legs.
Ipswich survived an early onslaught, including a missed penalty by Freddy Eastwood, to rack up a tenth successive home win and move into the play-off places as they beat Mick McCarthy’s Wolves at Portman Road in October 2007.
Wolves looked to have made the best possible start when Fabian Wilnis left a back-pass to goalkeeper Neil Alexander short, Michael Kightly nipped in and Alexander clipped him to concede a spot-kick.
However, Eastwood’s stuttering run-up didn’t fool the home keeper, who made his second penalty save of the week by diving to his right to beat away the Wales international’s poor effort.
Still Wolves continued to pour forward, but Ipswich steadily worked their way into the game and on 42 minutes Owen Garvan played a through ball into Alan Lee, who held off Jody Craddock’s challenge before curling the ball beyond the keeper with the outside of his boot to make it 1-0 to the Blues.
Town then doubled their lead on 52 minutes, as a quick Jon Walters throw was collected by Pablo Counago and the Spaniard tricked his way beyond Darren Ward before slamming past Hennessey.
Wolves tried to rally and Bothroyd had the ball in the net from a Seyi Olofinjana cross but was well offside, before Danny Haynes sealed the win in stoppage time when he took a ball from Dan Harding and turned his marker Neil Collins inside out before hitting a rocket of a left-foot shot past Hennessey from 15 yards out.
