Iconic buildings of the past to be featured at show at the Quay Theatre, in Sudbury

Industrial sites, schools and shops will be part of the “2018 Caught on Camera” on Sunday.

“Some are buildings that were once landmarks in the town,” Heritage Centre trustee David Burnett said of the images he has chosen from its archive of more than 1,100 historic photos.

They include the EDMI malting where shoppers at Waitrose now fill their car boots where men sweated in the building as they shovelled barley during the malting process ready for brewing; Cundy’s three-storey warehouse where an army of women sorted and packed pea and bean seeds bound for customers as far away as New Zealand; Quay Lane and part of the gas works site which was once dominated by two huge gas holders and a five-storey high building locals called “the Cathedral” and which all became obsolete following the discovery of natural gas in the North Sea; and an important building that survives on the Market Hill built in 1903 for the London & County Banking company and eight years later became part of the Westminster Bank and is now the NatWest.

The show is at 7.30pm and tickets are £7.
