Birketts in £1,000 donation to St Elizabeth Hospice from its in-house `tuck shop’.

Everyone has fond memories of tuck shops from their youth and as part of Birketts’ charity drive to celebrate their 150th anniversary in 2013 the law firm decided to re-create one.

The premise is simple: sweets, chocolate and crisps are ordered in bulk and then sold on so that the profits are donated to charity, with the rest replenishing the stock.

Jayne Wade, Shipping and Logistics office administrator, has been running it for the past five years.

Nigel Farthing, sponsor of the CSR committee at Birketts said: “It costs over £10.5m a year to run St Elizabeth Hospice and they rely on fundraising, donations and volunteers to keep them going. This is a wonderful example of how small changes can make a big difference to a local charity (as well as our waistlines).”

Jazmin Peach, corporate fundraiser at St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to receive this donation from Birketts. St Elizabeth Hospice relies on the generosity of extraordinary people to help us provide local hospice care free of charge for local people. Over the years we have developed a close relationship with Birketts and we’re delighted that they will be supporting Elmer’s Big Parade next year too.”
