As the mercury rose once again this weekend, Nick Robinson of Radio Four’s Today programme wondered aloud “why on earth I’ve spent all this money going abroad next week.”
Mr Robinson could have spent the coming days sunning himself from the garden of his second home in Orford on the Suffolk coast, where the temperature is predicted to hit 29 degrees between now and Saturday.
He is one of an estimated record 2.5m holidaymakers who headed abroad this weekend at the start of the holidays for many schools in England, many of whom will be having similar thoughts about whether they should have stayed put this summer.
