An interior designer who has worked on some of Suffolk’s most historic buildings has launched her own fabric, which is inspired by her grand restoration projects.

Rosemary Cattee recently finished remodelling a 16th century Grade II listed property in Grundisburgh.

She also commissioned local upholsterers to make bed canopies for half tester beds and replica 17th century curtains with soft furnishings at Darsham House, near Saxmundham.

The 57-year-old runs her business, Rosemary Cattee Interior Design, from her home in Newbourne with her partner Richard Somerville.

She has just released her first product - a fabric collection ‘Newbourne Linen’ in a palette of muted shades.

“I am very excited by this range, which brings in some colours that have been instrumental in some of the schemes we have implemented in historic homes across the region,” explained Ms Cattee. “It was important to me that it was an intimate collection of light and pale colours that would not overwhelm a room, and could subtly inject colour to enhance any décor scheme with its natural and classic feel.

“Hand-sewn braid down the leading, bottom and back edges of the curtains adds that little bit of extra detail.”

The couple have been lucky enough to be involved in several period restorations, but the one that Ms Cattee is most proud of is a Grade II listed Suffolk Hall which they “sympathetically” refurbished over an 18 month period, including a new handmade kitchen. “The interior decoration was last carried out in the early 70’s,” she explained. “There were elements which we wanted to retain, such as the dining room in which the walls had been covered in a deep red linen, and curtains in the same fabric, detailed with a wide braid and contrast Roman blinds. We replicated this inspirational decoration scheme using a stunning Prussian blue and taupe linen with braid detail, and a bespoke geometric carpet.”

Ms Cattee describes her style as a mixture of classic English, interjected with some contemporary twists. “I am generally not swayed by trends or fashions, but choose things I like or which complement a room or tie in with a room’s existing aesthetics,” she explained.

The Newbourne linen fabric collection is a 100% light linen and woven with top quality yarns providing a natural looking fabric and is suitable for curtains.

It is available in: Duck Egg, Sky, Light Grey, Putty, Denim, Navy, Dusky Pink, Claret, Mocha and Slate.
