Tributes have been paid to Ipswich sports shop owner Malcolm Marriott, who has died after a lifetime of running shops in the heart of the town centre.

Malcolm ran Rovian Sports in Ipswich for many years, most recently in St Peter’s Street, and previously in Queen Street.

He was a stalwart of the St Peter’s Street and latterly the Saints independent traders association.

Other Saints traders said he would be sadly missed.

Wendy Childs has been running Maud’s Attic, antiques and collectables, for more than 21 years.

She said: “Malcolm would do anything for anyone. He was a very generous, warm man – and great fun really.

“He loved being in business and he loved being part of the community here.

“He would be in and out of the other businesses and shops, and if you asked for help he would give it.

“When we opened 21 years ago he was here already, having been in Queen Street before.

“I would say he was absolutely amazing. He really would help anybody.

“About 15/20 years ago, when we started a street association, he organised our first Christmas lights. Although he couldn’t climb a ladder, he would always be at the bottom holding it. He will be missed.”

Cathy Frost, of Love One gift shop, added: “I had the pleasure of knowing Malcolm for 11 years.

“When I opened my shop in 2007 he was one of the first people to say hello and offer support.

“He was always there to share a coffee and a story.

“Malcolm has been part of the small business community in Ipswich for many years, with Rovian sports on Queen Street and in later years in St Peter’s Street.

“I know I speak for many businesses in The Saints. He will be sorely missed by us all, he was very much part of our community.

“We have lost a very dear friend and neighbour, a real Ipswich treasure.”

Over the past few years the Saints has received awards for its special mix of independent businesses.

Antonion Bellini, of the Italian Shirt Shop, said: “Losing Malcolm has left a very large whole in St Peter’s Street. He was a wonderful man who had time for everyone.”
