Essex fruit juice and marmalade makers scoop top accolade at Great Taste Awards 2018

Essex fruit juice makers Cotchel and marmalade makers Thursday Cottage have each scooped a celebrated three star accolade at the 2018 Great Taste Awards.

Thursday Cottage at Tiptree, fruit farmers Cotchel at Great Oakley near Harwich and turkey farmers S J Frederick & Sons at Roydon in Harlow all took the top accolade.

Suffolk two star winners were: Sticky Pickle from sauce makers Stokes Sauces Ltd at Rendlesham; Blackcurrant fruit cream ice, and Raspberries & cream, from ice cream makers Alder Tree Ltd at Needham Market; Fava Bean Umami Paste from Hodmedod Ltd at Halesworth; Homemade Muntjac Merguez & Pork Sausage Roll from Truly Traceable Venison & Game Pies at Halesworth; Suffolk Draught Cyder from Aspall Cyder Ltd at Debenham; H&J Bean to Bar Chocolate Gelato from Harris & James Ltd at Southwold; and Choccy ginger from Munchy Seeds at Leiston.

Two star Essex winners were: Dark Rye with Sunflower Seeds, and Malted Rye with Seeds & Grains, from Amber Foods Plus Ltd at Barking; Temple Farm Bronze Free-Range Whole Turkey from S J Frederick & Sons at Roydon, Harlow; Maldon Deep Smoked Salmon, and Juniper Smoked Salmon, from Lambton & Jackson at Heybridge, Maldon; LillyPuds Plum Pudding with Fruit Gin from LillyPuds Ltd at Broomfield, Chelmsford; Hepburns Smoked Bacon from Hepburns Food at Mountnessing and Brentwood; Novus Sapphire Earl Grey from Daily Grind Imports at Bradwell-on-Sea; English Heritage All Butter Cherry Curd, and Thursday Cottage Passionfruit Curd from Thursday Cottage Ltd at Tiptree; Very Strong Wholemeal 100% Canadian Bread Flour, Organic Strong Stoneground Wholemeal Bread Flour, Organic Strong White Bread Flour, and Organic Country Fayre Malted Brown Bread Flour from W & H Marriage & Sons Ltd at Chelmsford.

A total of eight Suffolk food and drink items and 14 from Essex scooped two stars, while 37 Suffolk products and 47 Essex ones gained one.

Great Taste, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, is an industry benchmark for fine food and drink. Of the 12,634 products entered, 37% received a rating, with only 192 foods achieving the coveted three stars.

Thursday Cottage director Donna Smith said they were “delighted” at the award for its Blood Orange Marmalade.

“We created the recipe for Blood Orange Marmalade many years ago and it is still made in the traditional manner using small open pans and it is hand poured into the jars,” she said.

Cotchel, based at Brook Farm, Harwich, scooped three stars for its Topaz & Evelina Apple Juice, while S J Frederick & Sons took the top accolade for its Temple Farm White Free-Range Whole Turkey.
