Eight brothers

and one team

WELL you've heard of the Neville brothers, the Charlton brothers and, in non-league circles around here, the Newson twins at Stanway.

But I bet it's a long time since you saw EIGHT brothers in one team.

Well I'm indebted to Russell Pope for this fine picture of Kirton United, circa 1963.

And although Russell isn't one of the brothers in the picture, the eight young men photographed here are all brothers.

The Lambert brothers to be precise. There's dad John (who was 55 at the time), David (who was 21), Dennis and twin brother Raymond (19), Peter (24), Ronald (26, Brian (22), Donald (29) and Derek (30).

Isn't it a fantastic photograph? And where are they all know?

Russell adds: “This photo and article appeared in the Charles Buchan Football Monthly magazine at the time.

“We (Kirton) played in division two of the Ipswich & District League at the time and the other members of the team (not pictured) were Charlie Bilner (goalkeeper), me and my brother, Norman.

“I certainly don't think that you would find 8 brothers in a team anywhere in the country now.”

Or would you . . .
