MOTORISTS were warned of major delays today as a severe storm forced the closure of the Orwell Bridge.Police and the Highways Agency were coordinating efforts to close the bridge to all traffic after strong winds raised safety concerns.
HEAVY storms and the closure of the Orwell Bridge mean motorists should only travel if their trip is essential, police said today.
Traffic is moving very slowly in Ipswich and drivers can expect severe delays.
“We ask that people delay their journeys unless travel in the Ipswich area is absolutely essential,” a police spokeswoman said.
Police and the Highways Agency co-ordinated efforts to close the bridge to all traffic after strong winds raised safety concerns.
The bridge was closed by 9.45am.
The Highways Agency advised Suffolk police to close the bridge as wind speeds increased.
All traffic heading toward the bridge will be diverted off the A14 in both directions and diverted through Ipswich.
