New long-haul routes from Stansted Airport have made some of the most popular global holiday destinations that bit more accessible for East Anglian passengers.

Emirates, Primera Air and low-cost carrier WOW air are now flying direct to six of the 10 most in demand destinations in the world - New York, Dubai, Boston, Washington, Toronto and Tel Aviv - from the Essex airport.

And there are plans to add more to the list because London Stansted is hoping to secure direct services to at least 25 new long-haul destinations in the next five years.

Previously, Zoom airlines ran low-fare long haul flights from the airport but operations were ceased in August 2008 when the company went bankrupt.

Now long haul is back on the agenda and here we look at 15 of the proposed long-haul destinations and why they would be popular with holiday-makers.

Hong Kong: There are so many incredible sights to be seen in Hong Kong it could be a struggle fitting them all in to one holiday. 10 attractions which are popular with tourists are The Peak, Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, Hong Kong Disneyland, Ladies’ Market, Ocean Park Hong Kong, Temple Street Night Market, Lan Kwai/SoHo, Golden Bauhinia Square, Lantau Island - Mgong Ping,

Stanley. Tourist information site, Discover Hong Kong, say that if you can only do one thing while you visit the city make sure it is The Peak. The Peak is the highest point on Hong Kong Island allowing you to see incredible views of skyscrapers, Victoria Harbour, and the green hills of the New Territories.

Los Angeles: Prepare yourself for a holiday of a lifetime in the luxurious location that is Los Angeles. The famous Hollywood Walk of Fame is a must with 2,600 five pointed terrazzo and brass stars embedded on the sidewalks to check out, you really will be walking in the foot steps of your favourite celebrities.

Make sure you also find time to take a picture in front of the iconic Hollywood sign. Santa Monica Pier is one not to be missed it is a popular landmark dating back to over 100 years, walk along the pier and then enjoy the sandy gorgeous beach.

San Francisco: For starters you must drive, cycle or walk over the iconic Golden Gate Bridge when you visit the city. San Francisco is also home to one of the oldest and most established Chinatowns in the US.

This picturesque town has traditional eateries, dim sum joints, cocktail lounges, karaoke bars, ornate temples, the Chinese Historical Society of America Museum and lots more.

Other things to check out during your stay is Pier 39, the San Francisco cable car system, the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, the Painted Ladies and lots more.

Tokyo: This busy capital city is unforgettable with its mix of ultra modern to traditional from neon-lit skyscrapers to historic temples. The top 12 attractions to visit while you are there according to the official guide are Sesoji Temple, Tokyo Skytree, The National Art Centre, Shibuya Scramble Crossing, Okutama & Around, Ryogoku, Omotesando, Mikurajima Island, OK Yokocho, Sunshine Aquarium, Tokyo Cruise Asakusa Pier, and Meiji Jingu.

For a look at Japan in times gone by for tranquillity The Sensoji Temple is perfect, this is the most famous and photographed temples in the city as it is the oldest Buddhist temple in the capital. For somewhere livelier and for great food, follow the bright lights of OK Yokocho here you will find around 30 eateries and pubs.

Montreal: Mount Royal, a landmark mountain, needs to be top of your tick list as it will give you breathtaking views of the whole city.

The Montreal Botanical Garden, which stretches over 185 acres of land, is popular with visitors as it has picturesque views, a quirky Chinese lantern garden and 10 themed greenhouses. There are so many stunning sights to see including Notre-Dame Basilica (a church dating back to 1824), Montreal Biodome, Saint Joseph’s Oratory, La Ronde (an amusement park) and more.

Chicago: This exciting city can be explored by foot, bike, car or Segway.

The top five attractions to mention are the Chicago Riverwalk which has jaw-dropping river and city views. Then there is the Navy Pier which is great for children and those adults wanting to release their inner child a great feature of the pier is the climate-controlled Ferris wheel. Millennium Park is worth a visit as you can capture the perfect picture at Cloud Gate and enjoy the Crown Fountain. Chicago also has one of the top ten tours in the US with their Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise tour.

And last but not least gasp at the Mies Van der Rohe skyscrapers, and tour the living museum that is Frank Lloyd Wright architecture.

Miami: Top things to do in dreamy Miami include Bayside Market Place, Jungle Island, Collins Avenue, the Venetian Pool and Crandon Park. For those of you looking for a place to shop the Bayside Market Place is a large waterside shopping centre with popular stores and plenty of sit down restaurants so you can make a day of it.

Next on the agenda animal lovers will be wowed by Jungle Island as it is home to nearly 3,000 animal, bird and plant species, make sure your camera is at the ready. The Venetian Pool is an iconic site with a spring water filled pool, a tropical backdrop and incredible waterfalls - it also has a history dating back to 1923.

Singapore: Have you ever been to a night zoo? Well, you have the chance to in Singapore. Aboard a Safari buggy and get driven around the zoo meeting animals as you go, the tour guide will also tell you stories about the animals and answer any questions you have.

If this doesn’t interest you there are so many other amazing things to see and do like taking a ride on the Singapore Flyer, visiting the iconic Merlion Park, experiencing the Sri Mariamman Temple, viewing the breathtaking Masjid Sultan and more.

Beijing: Once you have had your picture taken on the Great Wall of China there are a many things you could do next.

The Forbidden City is a palace complex in central Beijing it is home to the palace museum, there is so much to see here and learn about you might need more than just one day there.

Make sure the Summer Palace is on your holiday itinerary too as this colourful palace is assembled on a lake and is surrounded by incredible views. Other attractions include the Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, Beihai Park and more.

Bangkok: A city known for its vibrant street life and ornate shrines - the city of Bangkok will amaze you. There is so much you need to cram into your holiday including The Grand Palace which is located at the heart of the city.

The Grand Palace was a former residence for King Rama I to King Rama V of the Rattanakosin Kingdom, it is now used for hosting royal ceremonies and welcoming the king’s guests, state guests, and other foreign dignitaries.

Other places to see are the Buddhist temple Wat Pho, Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the lively Khaosan Road, the riverside temple Wat Arun and Chatuchak Weekend Market.

Johannesburg: South Africa’s biggest city is an amazing place to holiday. Thrill seekers should check out Gold Reef City which has more than 30 roller coasters, an interactive history of gold mining and a 4D theatre.

The Apartheid Museum will teach you everything you need to know about the city, the Cradle of Humankind is a 131,000 acre listed area which has caves, fossils and rich wildlife. The Nelson Mandela Square is for those who fancy a shop and something to eat. There is something for everyone to enjoy and explore.

Seoul: The capital city of South Korea is known for its modern skyscrapers, high-tech subways, street markets, palaces and Buddhist temples.

Notable attractions include Gyeongbokgung Palace, which once had more than 7,000 rooms, Dongdaemun Design Plaza, a convention hall with curving architecture and a rooftop park and Jogyesa Temple, site of ancient locust and pine trees. You will also want to make time to visit Changdeokgung which is one of the most beautiful palaces in Seoul, there are guided tours in English held at 10.15am and 1.15pm.

Manila: Located on the island of Luzon, Manila is the capital city of the Philippines. It has everything that makes a great holiday location, vibrant lively streets with modern skyscrapers, culture and history to educate you, stunning water-side views, gorgeous luxurious beaches and so much more. If you want to see a bit of everything check out Rizal Park, Fort Santiago, Manila Ocean Park, San Agustin Church, National Museum of the Philippines.

Vancouver: This city is a bustling west coast seaport in Canada, it is a popular filming location as it is surrounded by mountains. 14 attractions which are worth a visit are Chinatown, Coal Harbour, Commercial Drive, Davie Village, Gastown, Granville Island, Granville Street, Kitsilano, Lower Lonsdale, Robson Street, South Granville, South Main, West End, Yaletown.

These are all very close together so you could do the visits by foot. Davie Village is a very photogenic area to visit with rainbow flags and sunburst banners which is very popular especially during pride celebrations.

Colombo: If you want a mix of architecture, colonial buildings, high-rises, and shopping malls Colombo is for you. One to make sure you photograph is the giant Buddha at Vihramahadevi Park, this stunning location is next to the National Museum in Sri Lanka, in front is the colonial-era Town Hall so there is lots to check out in this area.

Other notable attractions include Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple which is one of the most important temples in the city and one of the oldest, if a shopping trip is what you fancy then the neighbourhood Pettah is the place to go, Jami UI-Alfar Mosque which is an incredible sight full of history.
