EUROSTAR train services between the UK and Brussels were suspended today after a fatal commuter train crash near the Belgian capital.

A head-on collision near Halle, about 10 miles south of Brussels, left 20 passengers dead, according to the town's mayor.

Other reports put the fatalities at between 20 and 30, with many more injured.

The accident happened in mid rush-hour between commuter trains travelling in opposite directions on the same track.

Carriages reared up in the air during the impact and power lines were brought down.

A third train was derailed and local train services into and out of Brussels were disrupted.

Eurostar services between London and Brussels were suspended, with a "reduced service" operating between Eurostar stations in the UK and Lille, in France.
