Station Manager Mel Buck said: "It is too early to say at the moment what caused the blaze.

"We will be working alongside the police and there is plenty of dampening down to do and there will be appliances here for the remainder of the day.

"We will be investigating the incident."

A spokesman for Suffolk police said a closure is in place on Rectory Lane after smoke was blowing across the road.

Speaking at the scene a fire officer said: "We have taken over from the initial crew.

"The fire has been extinguished and the building has been made safe.

"The road closure is to remain in place for some hours and there is no access to Rectory Lane and the church car park for now."

A stop call was made just before 8am by the fire service.
