A controlling Beccles man who grabbed his former partner’s throat making it hard for her to breathe has been jailed for 20 months.
Sentencing 30-year-old Paul Whall, Recorder Richard Conley said the incident must have been extremely terrifying for the victim.
He said that during the couple’s two year relationship, Whall had restricted her contact with her friends, controlled what she wore and threatened self-harm or suicide if she didn’t as she was told.
“You made her life extremely unpleasant,” said the judge at Ipswich Crown Court.
He said that since he’d been in custody, Whall appeared to have come to his senses and had worked with a prison probation team.
Whall, of Newsons Avenue, Beccles, admitted controlling or coercive behaviour towards his former partner by controlling what she wore and threatening self harm and suicide if she didn’t do as he said.
He also admitted being in breach of two suspended prison sentences.
In addition to being jailed he was banned from contacting his former partner.
The court heard that on one occasion Whall had grabbed his former partner’s neck tightly, making it hard for her to breathe.
