Highways chiefs and bypass campaigners have expressed frustration at an energy company’s alleged failure to share the “vital” information required to determine a long-awaited transport solution in Suffolk.

The Four Villages Bypass Group claims EDF Energy’s withholding of traffic modelling data related to the development of its Sizewell C power plant is “hampering” Suffolk County Council’s ability to progress plans.

The group and the council both agree that all four villages – Marlesford, Little Glemham, Stratford St Andrew and Farnham – should be bypassed due to long-standing traffic concerns, which they feel will be exacerbated during the construction of Sizewell C.

Group spokesman Debbi Tayler said the bypass was “absolutely central” to the council’s plans and accused EDF of “prevarication” and not engaging with the community.

The county council has confirmed its intention to pursue the bypass and said much of the funding would be sought from EDF as part of the mitigation of Sizewell C.

However, without the company’s construction traffic data, the authority claims it is difficult to make the necessary judgements to develop a viable bypass proposal.

A council spokesman said: “We’re as frustrated as the local communities with the absence of this information and we’re pressing EDF for it.”

EDF claims to have shared its latest “base traffic modelling” with the county and district councils, and will deliver full report “once the work is completed”.

A company spokesman said: “We are undertaking a robust transport assessment to inform our emerging proposal for the Sizewell C project. “This is detailed and important work, which takes into account objective modelling work for the project is ongoing and we confirmed at the Sizewell C Community Forum in March that results will be presented at Stage 2 (of the) consultation later this year.”

The spokesman added that EDF held regular meetings with the county and district councils and kept communities informed through presentation events.

“The Four Villages Bypass Group is welcome to discuss views directly with us,” the spokesman added.
