There is severe disruption on the A12 this morning, with stop-start traffic in the Witham bypass.
Police say cows managed to get onto the road and were hit by a number of vehicles.
The incident happened early this morning, and traffic was diverted through the centre of Witham.
It is understood some people have suffered minor injuries as a result of the collisions.
UPDATE: the road has reopened to large delays stretching between Stanway and Kelvedon, with heavy traffic on the A120 as drivers take alternative routes.
