Six mile tailbacks have been reported on the A12 after a lorry pulling three tractors broke down in the northbound lane.
The lorry was between Kelvedon and Marks Tey when its brakes failed and lost its load, blocking the lane at about 3pm.
Traffic delays of 90 minutes have been reported with tailbacks of around six miles.
A police spokesman said the recovery vehicle arrived around 7.45pm to clear the road.
