A huge clean-up operation has opened one lane on the A14 near Stowmarket after a lorry carrying a large amount of meat, clothing and furniture shed its load causing massive delays.

Suffolk police were called to the incident on the eastbound carriageway of the A14 at junction 50 following reports that the road was blocked by a range of goods which had fallen from the back of a lorry.

The busy road was closed between junction 50 at Stowmarket and junction 49 at Tot Hill from 6am today with some drivers reporting delays of up to two hours however, one lane has now reopened.

Drivers had been forced off the road and onto country lanes to try to get to work causing gridlock in Stowmarket and surrounding villages.

Officers are on the scene and have begun a clean up operation to completely reopen the road.

A spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary said: "We are at an incident on the A14 where a lorry has shed a variety of goods onto the road.

"Highways agencies were informed and we are taking part in a clean-up operation."

Highways England have described the incident as a "large spillage".

Queues were stretching back from Tot Hill up past junction 47 at Woolpit and despite part of the road reopening traffic is still bad.

Highways England are advising drivers to exit the A14 at J49, Tot Hill and follow the A1308 through Stowmarket to the junction with the A1120 and B1113.

At the junction turn left and continue on the A1120 to re-join the A14 eastbound at J50, Cedars.
