Work to construct a new landmark footbridge over the A14 Port of Felixstowe Road, Suffolk, between Dockspur Roundabout (J60) and Port of Felixstowe Roundabout (J61) starts on 3 January 2006 and is expected to take five months to complete.

At first the work will be carried out alongside the carriageway and will involve earthworks and construction of the foundations. During this work there will be narrow lanes and a 40 mph speed limit on both carriageways of the A14, for the safety of drivers and construction workers, with occasional off-peak lane closures.

Later in the scheme the footbridge will be assembled in a lay-by beside the A14, followed by a weekend closure of the A14 to allow the footbridge to be installed. Landscaping work will be carried out and unobtrusive lighting will be installed.

Brian Pitkin, Highways Agency project manager, said: "This new bridge, when completed, will provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians and wheelchair users. It will also provide an important link between the residential areas of Felixstowe and the commercial and leisure facilities to the west, together with allowing for future provision of a cycle route.

"I'm also delighted to confirm that the new footbridge will be silver-grey, as voted by members of the public who attended the draft orders exhibitions in May."
