Abbeygate Sixth Form College in Bury St Edmunds launches logo which students helped to design
A new sixth form college in Bury St Edmunds which will open its doors to 700 students next year has unveiled its logo.
Abbeygate Sixth Form College, which will be situated near King Edward VI School opposite the county and borough council offices and West Suffolk College, will open in September 2019.
Building work on the multi-million pound centre will start this year and the sixth form will offer in the region of 40 A-levels as well as a number of enrichment and extra-curricular activities.
It will be run by the Suffolk Academies Trust – a collaboration between West Suffolk College and Suffolk One – as well as the Samuel Ward Academies Trust and King Edward VI School.
The new brand was revealed at West Suffolk College and displays a traditional motif reflecting the abbey gate paired with contemporary colours and typeface.

A competition, which was open to the project’s founder schools, was held to design the logo and the winning students who helped design it were awarded prizes.
The logo was a combination of three designs from Lois Bridges, 19, from One, Callum McGuiness, 17, from West Suffolk College, and a team from Stour Valley Community School which included Matthew Strellis, Jamie Warbis-Rodda, and Sofia Ilczenko, who are all 14.

The three winning designs were incorporated into the final logo by Trebuchet Design Agency in Ipswich.
Each team was presented with a £200 cash prize and Callum was awarded an internship by sponsor agency Trebuchet.
Yasmin Jeffery, West Suffolk College’s head of marketing and communications, said: “The brand captures the ambitions of the new school to be traditional in its pursuit of academic excellence, but reflective of the teaching vision, modern new building and the breadth of curriculum that will be on offer.”
Nikos Savaas, CEO of the trust, said the quality of the designs was “absolutely fantastic”, and that the judges were astounded by the high quality of the entries.
Student numbers at the sixth form college will rise from 700 to 1,700 in five years and recruitment for a principal is already underway.
The name of the centre was determined by a public survey and through consultation with local school pupils in August last year.
