Fresh calls have been made for EDF Energy to “substantially alter” its proposals for transport and workers’ accommodation should Sizewell C nuclear power station be built.

More than 60 people attended a public meeting staged by the Theberton and Eastbridge Action Group on Sizewell (TEAGS) to demonstrate the “serious ongoing concern” about current proposals connected with the £16billion project.

The main issues under discussion were proposals for traffic, with people calling for a bypass along a route known as D2 to connect the A12 cross-country to Sizewell to avoid reliance on the B1122, and the site for the workers’ campus.

Current campus plans propose accommodation for around 2,000 to 3,000 people on 34 hectares of farmland off the B1122, north of Leiston and south of Theberton and Eastbridge.

The campus would feature three or four-storey accommodation buildings – similar to student accommodation – plus indoor and outdoor leisure and recreation facilities, including a bar, canteen, gym, TV lounge, shops and laundry, and car parking.

TEAGS chairman Jon Swallow said “The meeting demonstrated that the community remains deeply concerned about many of the impacts of the proposed new reactors at Sizewell, especially the siting of construction workers, and believes that a relief road is essential.

“We welcomed the presence of three county councillors and urge them to lobby their colleagues and EDF to substantially alter their plans before any further consultations take place.

“Our audience and councillors alike raised the urgent need to increase awareness of the impacts of Sizewell C’s construction on other surrounding villages and communities. These impacts will certainly be felt much further afield than Theberton and Eastbridge, and we need to work together to make our voices heard.”

People from Blythburgh, Yoxford, Middleton, Leiston and Saxmundham attended the meeting along with county councillors Graham Newman, cabinet member for roads and transport, Michael Gower and Richard Smith, and James Sandbach, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Suffolk Coastal.

A letter from MP Therese Coffey was read, reiterating her opposition to the siting of the accommodation.

EDF Energy is currently finalising its proposals ready for the next stage of its consultation.
