The A14 was closed in west Suffolk this evening to allow an air ambulance to touch down following an accident involving a car and motorbike.

A Harley Davidson motorbike and Ford Focus were reported to have collided in the westbound carriageway near junction 42, for Westley, near Bury St Edmunds, at around 5.50pm.

Suffolk police said officers had closed the central interchange to allow an air ambulance to land.

A volunteer doctor from Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS) also attended.

“Two patients were assessed and treated at the scene by the SARS doctor, paramedics and a team from the East Anglian Air Ambulance,” a SARS spokesman added.

“One patient was taken by air ambulance to hospital with chest and leg injuries while the other was transferred by land ambulance with back and head injuries.”

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust added: “Two patients were treated at the scene. Two ambulances, an ambulance officer, a doctor from BASICS and the East Anglian Air Ambulance attended.

“One patient was taken by land ambulance to West Suffolk Hospital, while the second was flown to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.”

By 7pm, Suffolk police said the vehicles had been recovered, though officers remained on the scene.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was also called to attend.
