Cyclists are being invited to take part in a unique bike ride crossing all four of Suffolk's foot ferries in a bid to raise cash for a £12m estuary defence plan.

The Alde and Ore Estuary Trust said it was holding the Four Foot Ferries ride in aid of its Save Our Suffolk Estuaries campaign following the “enormous success” of last year’s event.

The “charity ride with a difference” will see cyclists set out on Saturday, September 22, from Harwich Ferry, before covering 42 miles of the Suffolk coast including the foot ferries at Bawdsey, Butley, and Walberswick.

Organisers say the riders are likely to see avocets, marsh harriers and seals on their journey.

“Please come and enjoy this ride through the Suffolk countryside to help the trust’s work in raising funds for river defences on the Alde and Ore Estuary,” said an event spokesman.

The AOET’s campaign aims to raise £12m, including £5m from donations, to improve the river defences and protect the estuary from the risk of devastating flood.

Visit the AOET website for details on how to take part.
