A married couple who died this week are thought to have fallen down the stairs of their Aldeburgh home.

Suffolk police has confirmed that following a post-mortem investigation, the deaths of John and Connie Hewitson are not believed to be suspicious.

Emergency services were called to the couple’s home in Acheson Way, Aldeburgh, at around 10.40am on Monday after receiving calls that two people had been found there unconscious.

Mrs Hewitson, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr Hewitson, 90, was taken to Ipswich Hospital with serious head injuries and later died there.

Suffolk police had initially treated the sudden deaths as “unexplained”.

The couple’s neighbours said Mrs Hewitson had been a carer for her husband who was said to have had dementia and was partially blind.

They are understood to have met at a Chinese restaurant in Woodbridge where Mrs Hewitson, who was originally from the Far East, had worked. One neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, said she had been a very attentive carer.

“She was absolutely devoted to him,” the woman added. “She was extremely kind to everyone in the close. Lots of people knew her. She made it her job every Sunday evening to put the bins out for everyone.

“She was a really nice lady. I will miss her terribly.”

The neighbour said she had been alerted to the incident when someone called on her door and said: “There’s been a terrible tragedy”.

It is believed the couple both had children from previous marriages.

Mr Hewitson originally moved to the home in Aldeburgh with his first wife, who later died.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses or people with information to call 101.

Anyone who has information that could assist the investigation is asked to call Suffolk police on 101 quoting reference CAD 118 of October 15.
