Volunteer lifesavers launched from the Suffolk coast this morning to search for a possible person in the water after a personal locator beacon (PLB) was activated in the North Sea.

Aldeburgh RNLI received a request from UK Coastguard at just after 9am to launch its all-weather lifeboat, Freddie Cooper.

The crew was tasked to search an area between Aldeburgh and Southwold where the beacon was thought to have been located.

“Once in the area, Aldeburgh lifeboat crew used a method called a directional finder, to try to pin point the location more accurately,” an RNLI spokesman added. “A fishing boat heading for Sizewell beach was a potential target, but Shingle Street Coastguard, who had been tasked to meet the boat, found the crew did not have this particular PLB on board.”

The crews continued to search, however as the co-ordinates of the beacon later appeared to have been located on land, the crew was stood down and returned to station.
