New trustees are being sought to help shape the future of a Suffolk museum as it prepares for an £800,000 revamp.

Aldeburgh Museum announced this summer its six-figure National Lottery bid had been successful – paving the way for a transformation into a heritage site “fit for the 21st century”.

The work will see the historic Moot Hall undergo a major face-lift to enable the story of Aldeburgh to be told in a “new dynamic way” using digital displays and modern techniques.

To lead the transformation, the current trustees are looking to recruit three new members who can bring “energy, creativity and free time” to the project.

While all applicants are welcome, people with skills in community outreach and education, fundraising and development and heritage conservation are preferred.

Trustees’ chairman, Tony Bone, said it was an “exciting and exceptional” time to join the board. “Soon after the New Year, work will begin to remodel the museum, improve the presentation of the collections, and modernise the layout and facilities, ready for opening in May next year for the 2019 season,” he added. “We have been busy finalising the details of the work ahead, and appointing contractors. So, this is an important moment for anyone who is keen to become involved in the governance and decision-making of the museum and to make a difference now and in the longer term. We are looking for people with energy, creativity and some free time. Above all, they must be passionate about our heritage and committed to the Museum’s success”.

The posts are unpaid and voluntary, requiring around two days’ work a month, including attending board meetings at the Moot Hall.

Mr Bone said the museum had an “ambitious programme” of community activities lined up for the launch in the spring, which had seen a volunteer activity and development officer appointed to manage this and train volunteers.

A contractor is also set to be appointed imminently, whose role will be to create a new digital aspect to the presentation of the collections, and to introduce space-saving and engaging techniques to bring virtual reality to Aldeburgh’s rich history and culture.
