Allan Fairweather, of Oulton Broad, Lowestoft, was pronounced dead at the scene on September 25 this year, after a kart collided with his at Ellough Park Raceway, near Bungay.

The opening of his inquest, held (October 24) in Bury St Edmunds, heard that Mr Fairweather, aged 64, had come to a stop at the track, before another kart collided with his.

Mr Fairweather was thrown from his kart, and despite 30 minutes of attempted resuscitation, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 4.15pm.

Assistant Suffolk coroner Dr Dan Sharpstone said: “There was a family event at the race track. He was stopped...and the car behind hit in to the back of him. The force of this threw Allan from the kart.”

The preliminary medical cause of death was given as 1A traumatic chest injury.

Dr Sharpstone adjourned the inquest to allow further investigation to take place.

A statement from the family released last month stated that everyone taking part in the event was a family member. The other kart driver, who’s identity is not known, sustained an arm injury.

The East of England Ambulance service said they were sent to the outdoor kart track following a report of a man being thrown from a go-kart at about 3.19pm on Sunday before police officers also attended.

Ambulance crews treated “a man in his 60s who was unconscious and not breathing”, at the scene.

A rapid response vehicle, two ambulance crews, the Essex Air Ambulance and Lowestoft police officers attended.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) said at the time: “We received a call at 3.19pm on Sunday to Benacre Road, Ellough, to a report of a man being thrown from a go-kart. Despite their best efforts, the patient sadly died at the scene. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.”

A police spokesman said they are liaising with Waveney District Council as an investigation into the man’s death takes place.

The karting track reopened shortly after the crash and is operating as usual.
