Phil Collier, from Great Conard, is urging the mystery driver to come forward after he was hurt while out with family and friends in Sudbury.

He was struck by a vehicle in East Street, near the Weavers Tap and Wimpy food outlet, at about 3.15pm.

The driver, who he thinks was a woman, drove off in their car, believed to be a white Ford KA or Fiat 500.

Now the self-employed cleaner, who has two children, faces at least six weeks off work while his ankle heals and may need surgery in the future, which would result in even more lost earnings.

Mr Collier, who is married to Michelle, is appealing for dashcam footage of the accident but said he hopes “the person involved may have a conscience” and come forward.

The 45-year-old said: “I am angry. My main concern really was it could have been much more serious, not just for me, but if it was a child or elderly person it could have finished them off.”

Mr Collier has received multiple comments of support from well-wishers on social media after he posted a message in an attempt to gather more information.

He described how he had “hobbled around” for about five days before he sought medical help and learned he had actually broken his left ankle. His leg is now in plaster and he is using crutches.

He had delayed getting the injury checked out as he was concerned the hospitals and police would be busy over Christmas.

He added: “I didn’t want to spoil my family’s Christmas going to the hospital on Christmas Day.”

Despite his injuries Mr Collier and his wife managed to host 11 people on Christmas Day with the help of his family.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Constabulary said they were called at 4.30pm on Sunday, December 30, following reports of a road traffic collision in East Street, Sudbury, that happened on Monday, December 24.

Officers are investigating and enquiries are ongoing, she said.

Any witnesses who may have seen the incident should call Sudbury Safer Neighbourhood Team on 101, quoting CAD reference 236 of December 30, 2018.
