DISGRACED peer Lord Jeffrey Archer is set to sample East Anglian hospitality again – this time as guest of honour at a charity dinner and not of Her Majesty.

The former Tory MP and blockbusting novelist, who served more than two years in the region's prisons for perjury and perverting the course of justice, will be chief guest at a slap-up meal in the Maldon district.

Lord Archer will speak at a charity dinner at the Three Rivers Golf and Country Club in Cold Norton on October 31.

Maldon District Council Chairman John Archer is hosting the dinner to raise funds for his chosen charities for his term - Essex Air Ambulance and RNLI.

Conservative MP for Maldon and East Chelmsford John Whittingdale helped secure the controversial peer's invitation.

He said: "I've known him for at least 15 years. He has paid his debt to society and I think he's a figure that many people interesting. They will always listen to what he has to say and I hope the evening raises lots of money."
