ARMED police sealed off a Suffolk industrial estate early today and specialist negotiators are on their way to the scene after a man made threats to officers and barricaded himself inside a portable building.

A police spokesman said the siege on the Rougham Industrial Estate in Bury St Edmunds began at 9.30 this morning after the man resisted arrest for a traffic offence.

He said: “Police went to an address on the Rougham Industrial Estate at 9.30am to arrest a man for a traffic offence. He locked himself inside a portable building on the site and made threats towards officers. Negotiators are on their way to the site and the area has been cordoned off by police officers.”

The spokesman confirmed that armed officers were on the scene: “No-one else is believed to be involved at this stage and no-one has been hurt at this stage. Police are working towards a peaceful resolution of this matter.”

It is not known at this stage if the man inside the building is armed but police have thrown a wide cordon around the building, believed to be on a transport yard, and the immediate area is believed to have been evacuated.
