POLICE believe arsonists were responsible for a blaze which shut a town centre road early today.

Two empty shops in the Upper Orwell Street were damaged by the blaze which broke out shortly after 5.30am.

Firefighters from Ipswich were called to the scene, but quickly managed to bring the blaze under control.

A further two properties suffered minor smoke damage.

Police and fire investigators were today looking into the fire today, but it is thought the blaze started after someone got into the empty shops through a rear entrance.

Three fire crews were called to the scene, but no one was hurt in the blaze - it is thought no one was on the scene by the time they arrived.

It took them less than an hour to deal with the blaze and leave the scene

The road was reopened just at about 7am although police remained guarding what was considered a potential crime scene before the full investigation got underway.
