ARSONISTS broke into a number of beach huts at West Mersea in the early hours of this morning before setting 12 on fire.
Four beach huts on Victoria Esplanade were completely destroyed in the blaze and a further eight have suffered fire damage.
It is thought another 10 have been broken into.
Police are currently on scene conducting investigations.
Sergeant Cat Barrie said: “Fire crews have estimated that the fire was started at around 4am this morning.
“We are extremely keen to speak to anyone who saw or heard anything unusual or suspicious at that time.
“Please get in touch too if you smell evidence of a fire or fire accelerants on anyone,” added Sgt Barrie.
“This was a malicious and mindless act of vandalism that will have left many people's summer plans in ruins.
“I would urge anyone with information to give us a ring.”
Any witnesses are asked to call Colchester CID on 0300 333 4444 or anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
