ARMED police searched the streets of Clacton after a man reported that he had been approached by a gunman.
The victim told officers the man had asked if he had any money or jewellery before pointing a black pistol at him in Anchor Road.
The gunman fled empty-handed after the incident at 3.17pm yesterday and armed police were deployed to search for him.
CCTV operators also assisted in the hunt for the man who was thought to have left the scene in a Ford Mondeo.
Firearms officers were eventually stood down an hour after the attempted robbery after finding no trace of the assailant.
