An author will showcase his book about famous poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, which was mainly written in Sudbury, at Gainsborough’s House next week.
Simon Edge will read from his novel – The Hopkins Conundrum – on Thursday, September 14, which is based on the life of the poet and the five shipwrecked nuns who were the subject of his poem – The Wreck of the Deutschland.
The real-life events on which the novel is based have an East Anglian connection, as the nuns died in a shipping tragedy in 1875 and their bodies were brought ashore at Harwich.
The novel, which has received good reviews from the Spectator, Daily Express and the Press Association, is an original mix of fiction, literary biography and satirical commentary.
Copies of the book will be available to sign at the free event, which will take place from 6pm-8pm.
