Investigations are continuing into a blaze which destroyed over 200 bales of straw housed in a barn at Combs, near Stowmarket.
More than 50 firefighters were called to tackle the incident at Model Farm, in Park Road, at 7.45pm on Monday.
And along with farm staff they managed to drag the bales out of the barn onto nearby land to allow it to burn out.
At its height flames could be seen penetrating through the roof of the 30 x 15 metre building and neighbours living nearby had to move their vehicles away from the fire.
The farm owner, who wished not to be named, said the roof of the concrete and asbestos building had been destroyed and that loss adjusters were due at the farm to access the damage.
He said that each bale weighed about half-a-ton each and that he helped to drag them out of the barn with a grabbing loader.
The building is situated near seven homes which are barn conversions and two men living there said they had to react swiftly to move their vehicles away from the blaze.
David Clark said: “I got a knock on the door and saw the fire and then dialled 999 to get the fire brigade and then we got our vehicles out of the way before the fire engines got here.
“If the wind had been going in the other direction they would have had to have hosed the houses down. It was a big conflagration as the barn was stacked high with straw.”
And Rob Hazelton said: “It was not a comfortable feeling and if the wind had been blowing towards the houses it would have been a real worry.
“You could see the glow of the flames through the timbers of the barn doors and then whoosh it all went up but we did not feel in any danger.”
Suffolk Fire and Rescue sent four fire engines, an aerial platform and water carrier to the scene with crews from Ipswich East, Elmswell, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Needham Market and Princes Street attended.
The blaze was brought under control shortly before 9.45pm, though crews remained on site and were still in attendance yesterday until 11.30am.
