A community building in Barrow has received a donation of £9,000 from the Asda Foundation to add the finishing touches to its refurbishment.

The Town Estate Room, a Grade II-listed building in the heart of the village, underwent an entire refurbishment after falling into disrepair.

The building, which serves as a social hub and general information point, is held in trust by the Town Estate Foundation, who made the application to the Asda Foundation with the support of staff at Asda’s Bury St Edmunds store in Western Way.

The money donated will go towards funding the finishing touches at the centre including kitchen equipment, tables and chairs, equipment for a youth club, IT equipment, outdoor furniture and play equipment.

Set up in 1988, the Asda Foundation is a registered charity which funds charitable projects and activities in the community.

Reverend Barbara Sherlock, chair of the management committee at the Town Estate Room, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be receiving this donation from the Asda Foundation.

“As we cater for a wide range of user groups, it is important that we have an outstanding facility that is not only fit for purpose, but also user friendly and functional.

“The equipment we’ve been able to provide has been the cherry on the cake of our refurbishment and means we can continue to tackle social isolation in a warm, welcoming and practical environment.”

Julie Ward, Asda Foundation senior manager, said: “We see the foundation as one of the many ways to give something back to the communities that support us.

“That’s why we lend a hand to the wide range of good causes with which our colleagues are involved, sharing their passion and helping to make a difference through a variety of projects across the UK.

“Supporting local applications such as the Town Estate Room is really important to us – and we hope it will make a real difference within the local community in Barrow.”
