FORMER Beach Boy Brian Wilson will play a concert in Suffolk as part of his Word Tour, it emerged last night.

The world-famous star, who shot to prominence in the early 60's with the California-based band, will perform at the Ipswich Regent on July 20.

And fans are being promised that, for the first time, the legendary singer-songwriter will perform tracks from his mythical unreleased album Smile.

A spokesman for the Regent said: "Brian Wilson, co-founder of the Beach Boys, has added a date at Ipswich Regent as part of his new World Tour.

"For the first time in his 40-year career, Wilson will perform his mythical unreleased masterpiece Smile.

"In addition, the concert will include classic Beach Boys and Brian Wilson favourites, as well as selections from his new solo album."

Wilson formed the Beach Boys, along with his brothers Dennis and Carl, cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine.

The group's first record, Surfin', was released in 1961 and enjoyed great success behind the band's unique sound and toe-tapping harmonies.

Despite suffering a nervous breakdown in 1964, Wilson continued to work as the songwriter, producer and arranger for the group as they enjoyed a third number one single – Good Vibrations – in 1966.

It was then that he created Smile – but the album was never released and he suffered another breakdown before leaving the band in 1967.

Then, more than 20 years later in 1998, Wilson recorded and released his comeback album Imagination to critical acclaim.

Tickets for the Ipswich concert will cost £40 and £50. They go on sale tomorrow from the Regent's Central Box Office, in Princes Street, Ipswich.
