BERWICK have pulled off the major signing of former World Cup winner Charlie Gjedde to head their line-up next season.

Gjedde, who is returning from a lengthy injury absence, will also double-up in the Elite League with parent club Belle Vue but the Bandits will have first call in the event of a fixture clash.

Manager Ian Rae said: “The media is always full of stories at this week of the year, guessing who will have a Christmas No.1. Well, right now I can reveal that we have – and what a present for speedway fans!

“It was former Bandits’ team manager Chris Morton MBE – now promoter at Belle Vue - who first alerted us to Charlie’s avaiIability. I remember being stadium manager out at Berrington Lough when Chris was here in 1991, and I know he has always spoken very well of the way he was made so welcome that year. Now, twenty years on that goodwill has been repaid – and how!”

Berwick now have one place to fill in their 2011 team as they have also announced they have handed a place to Tamas Sike, who comes in on a 5.00 average.
