A TOUCH of big screen glamour is set to arrive at a small town's community centre when it begins its own weekly cinema nights.

The ambitious project will see Kesgrave's war memorial community centre transformed into a mini-cinema, showing a mixture of the latest blockbusters and old family favourites.

Centre manager Alan Smith is the man behind the scheme.

He said: "I want to bring affordable cinema to all. I think we've got a captive audience here.

"Obviously there are cinemas just up the road in Ipswich or Woodbridge but we won't be charging something ridiculous like £7 a seat.

"And people won't have the extra hassle of travelling there and finding somewhere to park."

The centre already has a full-sized screen and a projection room in its main hall. All extra equipment will be hired in from an Ipswich-based firm.

Mr Smith said: "We had a demonstration of the equipment here the other night and the whole place was totally transformed.

"It really was very impressive. It wasn't just a big screen in a hall, it was just like a proper cinema."

Mr Smith hopes to attract a wide cross-section of the community by running matinees for the over-60s on Sunday afternoons and holding special 'kids club' sessions during the school holidays.

He said: "People are always saying there is nothing for the kids in this area to do and this will hopefully be something that attracts people of all ages.

"It will also provide jobs for some of the youngsters as I hope to have a proper booking office and a merchandise area where we sell ice-creams, popcorn and that kind of thing."

It is hoped the first of the cinema nights will be on July 1.
