A MOTORCYCLIST died this afternoon following a collision on the outskirts of an Essex town.

The accident happened in Mersea Road, Colchester, just after 2.30pm when the rider came off his green Kawasaki ZX1100 motorbike.

The accident happened about 100 metres from the Cherry Tree pub at Blackheath and did not involve any other vehicles.

The rider, a 30-year-old local man, was declared dead at the scene.

Diversions were put in place for most of the afternoon as police carried out investigations into the cause of the accident.

The ambulance service sent a rapid response car and an ambulance which were there within five minutes.

The Essex Air Ambulance was also sent to the scene but was not used.

Police have asked for anyone who witnessed the accident to contact them.
