POLICE are appealing for information after two pensioners living in north Suffolk were targeted by distraction burglars last night.

The first incident occurred between 8pm and 8.30pm in Wrentham High Street, in the village south of Lowestoft.

A 93-year-old woman answered a knock at the door and found a man - described as white, aged in his 20s, of average height, slim build, with short tidy brown hair and wearing a checked shirt - standing there.

He asked if he could turn her water off. He gained access to the property and then made the woman check her shower taps while he was elsewhere in her home.

He then left without saying anything. A short time later the woman told a neighbour what had happened, family members were alerted and police were then called. Nothing appears to have been stolen but the 93-year-old has been left extremely upset by the incident.

House to house enquiries by police revealed there had been a white four-door car parked in a layby nearby around this time with three males - described as in their late teens to early 20s - in it. Police are keen to trace these males and would also like to speak to anyone who may have information about the incident or the man involved.

The second incident occurred at about 8.45pm - 8.55pm. A 76-year-old woman was her home at Lincoln Court in Kessingland when she heard a knock at the door. Again a man gained entry to the premises but this time he claimed he was there to do some gardening work.

The man took the woman outside to talk to her about the work and it's thought a second person entered the premises while she was distracted.

A short time later it was discovered that a large quantity of cash had been stolen from the property.

The man who called at the address is described as white, of slim build, aged in his late 20s to 30s, and was wearing light coloured trousers and a white baseball cap worn back to front.

Police are asking anyone with information about either of these incidents to call Lowestoft CID on 01986 835300.

Officers are also reminding residents to be extremely cautious when dealing with doorstep callers. Please make sure your doors are locked and never grant anyone access to your home unless you are happy they are who they claim to be. If in any doubt please alert police immediately using 999 - officers would rather check and find they are genuine than have you become a victim of this type of burglar.
