A motorist is being investigated by the British Transport Police - after jumping a railway red light on live TV.

The incident was captured on camera last night as reporter Tanya Mercer from ITV News gave a piece to camera in Westerfield about the dangers of railway crossings.

As she spoke to camera, the crossing’s warning lights began flashing and a warning alarm sounded.

One motorist nipped through as the lights turned amber but another went though after they had turned red - to the shock of viewers.

ITV News Anglia tweeted about the incident following the live report.

The tweet reads: “A word of advice: While our reporter @tanyamercer is doing a live about the dangers of ignoring warning signs at level crossings, it’s probably not the best idea to jump a red light live on air.”

But it appears officers from the British Transport Police (BTP) were watching the broadcast.

Supt Christopher Horton replied to the Tweet asking for footage of the cars.

He tweeted: “Two cars during your interview who blatantly contravene the red crossing lights.

“Would you be willing to provide us with your footage please so we can deal with the two drivers involved?”

Another Tweeter later spotted the first car has squeezed through on amber.

It comes as the BTP release shocking footage of terrifying near misses on the region’s level crossings as a new study reveals one in ten people won’t wait more than five minutes at barriers.

The crossing in Westerfield, from where the live TV piece was broadcast, had recorded the most prosecutions for people skipping red lights, with 49 logged from January to December 2017.

More than 500 offences relating to level crossings have been investigated in the Anglia region over the last year.
