The road shut by a burst water main this morning will remain closed until Wednesday, it has been announced.

People in Holbrook have today been plagued by a burst water main which interrupted the supply to homes as well as flooding the road.

The problem occurred in The Street and is the second time such an issue has hit Anglian Water customers this year in the same location.

In March, The Street was closed for several days after a sinkhole opened up, trapping a car.

The latest issue was first reported this morning with Anglian Water initially saying the problem would be resolved in the early afternoon.

But it was not until 7.30pm the company said supplies had finally been fully restored due to the complexity of the task facing engineers.

However The Street, one of the main arteries through the village, is going to remain shut until Wednesday because the burst water main also damaged the road.

A diversion will be put in place while the road is reinstated, Anglian Water said on its website.

David Rose, Holbrook’s councillor on Babergh District Council, said the leak and the road closure would be irritating for locals, particularly as it happened not long after the previous problem.

“It’s a bit frustrating and inconvenient, but it’s one of those things that happens,” he said yesterday.

“It’s a very busy street, especially with the school and the shops there.

“It happens all over the place. I think we’re unlucky it’s happened twice in a couple of months.”

Mr Rose said the same road also fed access to the local Co-op store as well as the village hall.

He added The Street was often used by very heavy vehicles such as “32-ton lorries”.

On it’s website Anglian Water thanked customers for their patience while the issue was dealt with and apologised for “any inconvenience we’ve caused by this interruption”.

It also explained to customers that even though the supply had returned the water may look a little cloudy or discoloured.

The organisation recommended running taps for a few minutes to allow it to clear.

It added anyone who continued to experience problems with low pressure of a lack of water, or if the water didn’t clear after running taps, should contact them on 03457 145 145 or get in touch via Facebook or Twitter.
