A COUNCIL and horse and carriage rides operator have appeared in court accused of breaching a health and safety regulation after a grandmother was fatally injured at a country fair.
At Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court today a date was set to commit St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Duncan Drye, 64, of Bishops Road, Bury St Edmunds, to trial.
Carole Bullett, 57, of Clark Walk, Bury St Edmunds, died from serious chest injuries in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, a day after being knocked down by a runaway horse and carriage at Nowton Park Country Fair in June 2011.
The borough council, which organised the event, and Drye, who had been running the horse and carriage rides, are charged with failing to discharge their duty as employers to ensure visitors to the country fair were not exposed to risks to their health and safety.
The defendants are due to appear at the magistrates’ court on February 21 to be committed to the crown court.
