AN EMERGENCY road closure has been carried out in Bury St Edmunds after two dips appeared in the carriageway.

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council said the dips in St Andrew’s Street South, near its junction with Risbygate Street, could be due to a void under the surface or a collapsed sewer.

He said their highways workers carried out some preliminary work on Monday and had been excavating the road yesterday, adding the work should be complete by the end of the week all going to plan.

“There are notices up advising people who use the bus services there where to go, which is invariably to the bus station,” he said.

He said the work involved excavating the road, repairing whatever needed to be repaired under the surface and reinstating the highway.

He added the public were not allowed to drive down that section of the road so car traffic was not being affected.
